TrustATrader Review: Is It Worth It for UK Tradespeople in 2026?

Is TrustATrader worth it in 2026? No published price, an estimated £240 to £750 a year paid up front, and no exit for 12 months. The terms, sourced.

TrustATrader review: a UK tradesman checking an annual membership invoice beside his van on a wet residential street

This TrustATrader review is written for the tradesperson paying the membership, not the homeowner looking for one. My verdict after reading the trader terms clause by clause: it is the cheapest of the big UK directories on paper, and the only one that caps your competition in writing.

It also refuses to tell you the price until a salesperson rings you back. The whole year is payable in advance, and the terms give you no way out once your profile is live.

Where I stand. I run Local Ladder, which builds websites and local SEO for UK trades. I earn money when a tradesperson decides to own their marketing instead of renting it from a directory, so weigh what follows with that in mind. No platform has paid to appear here, TrustATrader has not seen this page, and every figure links to a dated source. Prices were verified on 22 July 2026 and sit in my UK Trade Lead Cost Tracker; I re-read the trader terms on 20 September 2026.

The Quick Verdict

Worth considering if you:

  • Want a recognised badge and a review profile for a few hundred pounds a year
  • Do jobs where one win covers the annual fee
  • Have checked that your category in your area has space, and who else is in it
  • Can afford to pay the year up front and write it off if the phone stays quiet
  • Prefer a fixed cost to a bill that climbs with every lead

Poor value if you:

  • Need volume quickly. Checkatrade pulls roughly six times the Google traffic
  • Do small call-outs where a handful of jobs a year will not cover the fee
  • Want to test it for a month or two first. There is no short trial
  • Expect to take your reviews with you when you leave
  • Are not prepared to push sales for a number before the callback turns into a pitch

How TrustATrader Charges in 2026

TrustATrader is a flat-fee directory. You pay one annual membership, in advance, and nothing per lead and no commission. Homeowners browse the listings and contact the traders they like the look of directly.

That last detail matters. Pay-per-lead platforms sell the same enquiry to several trades, whereas TrustATrader sells you a listing and lets the customer choose. A homeowner can still ring three members, but the platform is not charging each of you for the privilege.

What it will not do is publish a price. The join page is a callback form, and the FAQ says only that “we charge a yearly fee for membership”. The single pound figure I could find anywhere on trustatrader.com is a £50 cheque for referring a friend.

What TrustATrader Really Costs

Every figure on record, with its evidence label. “Official” means TrustATrader published it; “third-party estimate” is another firm’s research; “member-reported” is a tradesperson describing their own quote. The conflicts are shown, never averaged.

Notice the direction of travel. The 2020 press figure and the older forum quotes are higher than both 2026 estimates, which suggests either prices have come down or the recent estimates describe an entry tier.

I cannot tell you which, and neither can anyone outside their sales team. One April 2026 comparison also describes the membership as rolling monthly, which contradicts TrustATrader’s own terms. Where a third party and the official terms disagree, I go with the terms.

Would It Pay for Itself on Your Numbers?

With no per-lead fee, the maths is simple. Your cost per job is the annual fee divided by the jobs the listing wins you in a year.

Jobs won in the yearCost per job at £240Cost per job at £750
2£120£375
6£40£125
12£20£62.50
24£10£31.25

Set that against Checkatrade, where third-party estimates put a typical year at £1,200 to £2,000 or more. A builder or roofer needs one decent job all year from TrustATrader to clear the fee, while a handyman on £80 call-outs needs ten.

The risk sits in the timing. You pay for month twelve before you have seen month one, so a listing that produces nothing costs you the full amount with no way to stop the loss early. Run your own figures through the break-even calculator on the lead cost tracker before the callback.

TrustATrader Reviews From Tradesmen: What the Forums Say

I went looking where tradespeople talk to each other. The first thing worth reporting is how little there is. Checkatrade fills pages of Reddit and trade forums every month; TrustATrader gets the odd thread every few years.

That thin evidence is a finding of its own. Fewer members talking usually means fewer members, and a smaller pool of homeowners to go round. Treat the reports below as individual experiences, several of them old.

1. No trial, and members notice

An electrician quoted about £830 a year in a 2017 ElectriciansForums thread put it this way: “despite how confident they are that I will get lots of work, they don’t allow you to sign up for less than a year to give it a trial run (not that confident then)”. The current terms still work that way.

Another member in the same thread pointed out that £800 was more than his total marketing spend for the previous year, which was £546.

2. Where you sit in the listings

The sharpest complaint in that thread was about position. One member searched his own Chelmsford postcode and found over 100 listings across ten pages, including a trader based in Southend. “What if you were the trader on page 10, hardly a good investment!”

That post predates the current terms, which cap each category at ten entries per area. The two facts are not necessarily in conflict, because everything depends on how TrustATrader draws “your geographical area”. Ask on the call, and search your own postcode before you ring.

3. It can pay back quickly

The balance: an electrician in the same thread reported “£2500 of work 2/3weeks in. All local work” shortly after joining, back in 2010. A year’s fee recovered inside a month is a good result by any measure.

4. Recent doubts on return

The most recent account I found is a thread on r/smallbusinessuk from a small business owner, who wrote that on their experience so far it “has not delivered a return on investment”. One person’s year is not a verdict, but it is the question to take into the sales call.

The Small Print That Decides Whether It’s Worth It

I read the trader terms and conditions on 20 September 2026. They were last updated on 15 February 2023.

Tradesperson's hands reading the small print of a contract carefully before signing

  • The year is paid in advance. Clause 5(a): the subscription fee is “calculated and payable annually… in advance”, and TrustATrader is under no obligation to provide the service until it has been paid.
  • No exit once you are live. Clause 5(d): “Once live on the Website you cannot cancel the membership agreement prior to the expiry of the 12 month membership period. Any fees paid are non-refundable.”
  • No automatic renewal. Clause 5(b): “We do not operate an automatic renewal system, we will contact you at the end of each year of your annual membership to discuss your renewal.” This is the fairest clause in the document, and rarer than it should be.
  • A written cap on competition. Clause 6(a): TrustATrader undertakes that there will be no more than ten entries in your trade category in your geographical area at any one time. No other big UK directory puts a number like that in its terms.
  • You must stay insured and accredited. Clause 4(e) requires valid public liability insurance, current membership of applicable trade bodies and any qualifications required by law.
  • The badge comes off when you leave. Clause 13: on termination your access ends, and you must remove the TrustATrader name and marks from your “paperwork, vehicles, website and so on”. If the logo is signwritten on your van, leaving has a cost of its own.

Is TrustATrader Legit?

Yes. TrustATrader is an established UK directory with a Trustpilot score of 4.7 out of 5 from around 8,000 reviews, and its terms oblige members to stay insured and qualified. I found no evidence of anything improper in how it treats its traders.

Two cautions for anyone reading that score. Trustpilot mixes homeowners rating a tradesperson with tradespeople rating the platform, and those are different products with different complaints.

Which? investigations have also criticised vetting standards across trade directories generally. A badge tells a homeowner that somebody checked your insurance, and it tells them nothing about the job you will do next week.

TrustATrader vs Checkatrade

This is the comparison most people are really making, so here it is side by side.

Checkatrade wins on volume, and it is not close. Its site draws an estimated 2.4 million UK visits a month from Google against roughly 389,000 for TrustATrader (DataForSEO organic traffic estimates, September 2026), helped by years of TV advertising.

Some of that is people reading Checkatrade’s cost guides, not people hiring, but a six-to-one gap survives the caveat. If your diary is empty and you are in a busy postcode, the bigger platform will send more enquiries, which is the case my Checkatrade review makes in detail.

TrustATrader wins on cost and on terms. A year costs less than two or three months of a Checkatrade Growth plan, the competition is capped, and nobody renews you without asking.

Some trades run both for a year and keep whichever earns its fee. If you try that, track which platform each enquiry came from, because memory flatters whichever one rang most recently.

Five Questions for the Sales Call

Because there is no published price, the callback is where the deal is made. Go in with these written down.

  1. What is the total for year one including VAT, and what will year two cost?
  2. How do you define my geographical area, and how many traders are in my category there today?
  3. How many profile views and enquiries did the average member in my category and area get last year?
  4. Which documents do you need from me, and how long does approval take?
  5. Will you put all of the above in an email before I pay?

A firm that is confident in its numbers will answer the third question. If the answer is a story about one member who did very well, you have learned something too.

TrustATrader Alternatives

Moving from one directory to another changes the billing model and leaves the arrangement intact. You are still renting a profile on someone else’s domain, and the reviews you earn there stay behind when you go.

The alternative every directory depends on is ranking on Google. A top-of-page Google Ads click for “plumber near me” costs £2.41 to £13.98 (Google Ads data, July 2026), and an enquiry from your own site is not sitting in a list beside nine competitors. That is the model I sell, so weigh my bias, then check the numbers in the tracker.

If you want to see what ranking involves for your trade, my guides for builders, roofers, plumbers and electricians use these same lead prices to show what it is worth.

I audit trade businesses’ local visibility for free: a grid showing where you rank across your area, who is above you, and the three changes worth making first. No obligation, and you keep it either way. See where you rank and I’ll run yours.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does TrustATrader cost per month?

It does not bill monthly. TrustATrader charges a flat annual membership, payable in advance, and publishes no price on its website. Two 2026 third-party estimates put it at £240 to £660 and £360 to £750 a year, which works out at roughly £20 to £62 a month. The real figure only arrives after you fill in a callback form and speak to sales.

Is TrustATrader worth it for tradespeople?

It can be, because the fee is low enough that one or two decent jobs a year cover it. At the top estimate of £750, a single job with £750 gross profit breaks you even. The risk is that the year is paid up front and the terms allow no cancellation once you are live, so a quiet year costs you the full fee.

Which is better, Checkatrade or TrustATrader?

Checkatrade has far more homeowner traffic and costs far more: members report £80 to £500 a month on a 12-month contract. TrustATrader is estimated at £240 to £750 for the whole year, caps each trade category at ten entries per area, and does not renew automatically. Pick Checkatrade for volume in a busy postcode, TrustATrader for a cheaper badge with less competition.

Can I cancel TrustATrader and get a refund?

Not inside the first year. Clause 5(d) of the trader terms says that once you are live on the website you cannot cancel the membership agreement before the 12-month period expires, and that fees paid are non-refundable. The terms also say there is no automatic renewal, so the membership ends at the anniversary unless you agree to renew.

Is TrustATrader legit?

Yes. It is an established UK directory with a Trustpilot score of 4.7 out of 5 from around 8,000 reviews. The trader terms require members to hold valid public liability insurance, current trade body membership and any qualifications the law requires. Treat the badge as a filter, because no directory's vetting guarantees the quality of an individual job.

Does TrustATrader share leads with other traders?

Not in the way pay-per-lead platforms do. Homeowners browse the directory and contact the traders they choose, so TrustATrader does not sell one enquiry to several members. A homeowner can still ring three of you. The difference is that the terms cap your category at ten entries in your area, where other directories publish no limit.

How does TrustATrader vet its traders?

The trader terms (clause 4(e)) require valid public liability insurance for the trade you advertise, up-to-date membership of any applicable trade bodies and the qualifications the law demands. A 2026 third-party comparison also lists identity checks, insurance verification and ongoing monitoring of customer feedback. Ask sales exactly which documents they need before the callback.

What happens to my TrustATrader reviews if I leave?

They stay on trustatrader.com and stop working for you. Clause 13 of the trader terms says your access ends on termination and you must remove the TrustATrader name and logo from your paperwork, vehicles and website. If the badge is signwritten on your van, price that in. Reviews on Google and your own site stay yours.
